Test Your Heating Now, On Your Terms, Not When It Stops

Most people meet their heating system for the first time on a cold morning in November, when they turn the thermostat up and nothing happens. That is the worst possible moment to find a fault. You are cold, the diary is full, and every engineer in Aberdeen is fielding the same call.

There is a better way, and it costs you nothing to start. Test your heating now, while the weather is still mild, so any problem turns up on your terms instead of at the worst time of year.

Here is how to do it, what a proper check involves, and the range of work we handle across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire when the seasons turn.

Why early autumn is the moment to check

Heating systems sit idle all summer. When they do, small issues get a chance to settle in quietly. Seals dry out, pressure drifts, and sludge that built up last winter has months to harden inside the radiators.

None of that shows while the heating is off. It only shows the first time you ask the boiler to work hard, and by then the cold has arrived.

Testing early gives you time. If something needs a part, a service, or a repair, you sort it in a mild week rather than a freezing one. You also skip the winter rush, when demand for engineers across Aberdeen is at its highest and the wait for an appointment gets longer.

A five minute test you can do yourself

You do not need any tools for this. Pick a mild day and run through the following.

  • Turn the heating on and let it run for twenty minutes. Listen for banging, gurgling, or a boiler that fires up and cuts out again quickly. Those noises are worth reporting.
  • Feel every radiator, top and bottom. Cold patches at the top usually mean trapped air, which a bleed can fix. Cold at the bottom often points to sludge, which needs a power flush.
  • Check the boiler pressure gauge. Most systems should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold. If it keeps dropping, there is a leak or a fault worth investigating.
  • Test your hot water. Run a hot tap and see how quickly it heats and how steady the temperature stays.
  • Look for the obvious. Any dripping, staining, or a faint smell around the boiler means stop and call a Gas Safe engineer.

If everything runs quietly and warms up evenly, that is a good sign. If anything on that list looks off, you have found it early, which is exactly the point.

What a proper heating check adds

A homeowner test tells you whether something is wrong. A full service tells you why, and it keeps the warranty valid at the same time.

When we service a boiler, we do more than glance at it. We run a combustion analysis with a flue gas analyser, to confirm the boiler is burning gas cleanly and efficiently. We check the pressures, the seals, the condensate trap, and the safety devices. The condensate trap matters in particular here, because a blocked one is one of the most common causes of a boiler locking out on the first hard frost in Aberdeen.

Every service is recorded in the benchbook kept with the boiler, and we send you a digital copy for your own records. If your boiler is under a manufacturer warranty, an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer is usually what keeps that cover in place.

The kind of work an autumn week brings

No two weeks look the same, but a typical stretch this time of year shows just how varied home heating work is. A recent run for us included:

  • Two full boiler installations. New, efficient units fitted and commissioned, with the pipework run cleanly so the next engineer can work on it easily.
  • A hot water cylinder replacement. An old tank swapped for a new one, before and after, with the connections tidied up properly.
  • Routine boiler services. The bread and butter that keeps systems safe and efficient through winter.
  • A landlord gas safety inspection. The annual check landlords are legally required to arrange for every gas appliance in a let property.
  • Legionella risk assessments. A check on the water system to manage the risk of legionella bacteria, which matters for landlords and for anyone with a stored water system.
  • General plumbing. The leaks, valves, and small jobs that come alongside the heating work.

That mix is the point. Heating, hot water, gas safety, and plumbing all live in the same cupboard, and it helps to have one Gas Safe registered team that handles the lot.

A quick welcome

We also want to introduce Ally, who has just started an apprenticeship with us. Scott and Zoe built Kelgas from scratch with a small, directly employed team, and training the next engineer up properly is part of how we keep the standard where it is. Welcome to the team, Ally.
